WARNING!
PixiePlus 0.5.0 has preliminary category support. It is not complete yet and
should be considered experimental. It won't damage or corrupt your images
but may not always work as expected.
PixiePlus now has preliminary category support. You can create up to 255 categories for your images such as "Dancing", "Vacation", or "Screenshots", and assign each image to one or more category. These categories are then shown in the image's tooltip and you can sort by them. This is very convenient if you have a bunch of photos in one folder because you want to view all their previews at once, (so you don't want to put them in subdirectories), but sometimes you only want to view the photos with a particular topic. It's also great if you have a bunch of images downloaded from the web and want to sort them by website. Just create a category for each site.
The first thing you have to do is create some categories to assign images to. This is very easy. From the "File" menu select "Create/Edit file categories". You'll be presented with the following dialog:
Adding a category.
Press the "New..." button and you'll be able to enter the name for the new category. You can enter up to 255 of them. If you ever want to remove a category select it and press the "Remove" button.
When done click "OK"!
To add or remove categories to a file or files select them and either use the right mouse button or the Edit menu. Then select the "Categories" item. You'll see two new items: "Add to category" and "Remove from category". If you only selected one file the "Add to category" item has a submenu listing all the categories you can assign an image to. The "Remove from category" option has all the categories the image already has been assigned to.
If you selected multiple files both the "Add to category" and "Remove from category" submenus will display all the categories. Don't worry, if you select an invalid option it won't affect anything. Either way, both options do what you would expect: either assign or remove files to categories. Then they will show up in the tooltip and you can use them when sorting.
You have two options when sorting by category. The first is to place all categorized items on top. You can turn this on by selecting "View" then "Sorting". Enable the "Categorized items on top" option and all your categorized files will show up on top of other files in the browser. The files will be sorted alphanumberically by category then by whatever sort method you selected for images within the same category.
You also can select to view only images within a certain category. To do
this press the category button on
the toolbar. This will pop up a menu that allows you to show only certain
categories:
Viewing only a certain category.
The category settings are automatically handled if you copy, move, rename, or delete files within PixiePlus. If you remove, move, or rename a file with another program or from the command-line PixiePlus of course has no way to know about it. It just detects the original file is gone and removes any category information for it.
