Main Menu and Keyboard Short-cuts

Main Menu

All of OmegaT's functionality is available through the menu bar at the top of the Editor window. Most functions are also available via keyboard short-cuts.

Short-cuts are activated by pressing Ctrl and a letter. Some short-cuts involve other keys. For readability purposes, letters are written in uppercase here.

Ctrl is used on Windows, UNIX and UNIX-like operating systems with keyboards featuring a Ctrl / Control key. Mac users should read cmd+key instead. The cmd key either has a command label or an apple mark on Apple keyboards.

Project

New Creates and opens a new project. The dialogue to create a project is the same as to edit the project.
Open <Ctrl+O> Opens a previously created project.
Import Source Files... Copies the selected files to the /source folder and reloads the project to load the new files.
Import From MediaWiki... Imports units from MediaWiki pages, based on the URL entered
Reload Reloads the project to take external changes in source files, legacy translation memories or glossaries into account.
Close Saves the translation and closes the project.
Save <Ctrl+S> Saves the translation to project's translation memory. OmegaT automatically saves the translation every 10 minutes or when you close the project or quit OmegaT.
Create Translated Documents Creates the target documents based on your translation of documents' text. The documents will be located in the /target folder.
Properties <Ctrl+E> Displays Project properties dialogue to edit project languages and folder locations.
Project Files... <Ctrl+L> Closes or opens Project files window (depending whether it is opened or closed).
Quit <Ctrl+Q> Saves the project and quits OmegaT. If you haven't yet saved the project manually confirms whether you would really like to quit.

Edit

Items that one can find in most applications (copy/cut/paste) are not displayed in this menu but are available with your system short-cuts. For example:
Copy <Ctrl+C> Copies selected text to clipboard.
Cut <Ctrl+X> Copies selected text to clipboard and deletes selected text.
Paste <Ctrl+V> Pastes the text from clipboard at cursor.
The menu itself contains the following items:
Undo Last Action <Ctrl+Z> Goes back to the status before the last editing action was taken. Does not work once the modified segment has been validated.
Redo Last Action <Ctrl+Y> Goes back to the status before the last editing action was cancelled. Does not work once the modified segment has been validated.
Overwrite Translation <Ctrl+R> Overwrites the whole target segment with the currently selected fuzzy match (by default the first match is selected).
Insert Translation <Ctrl+I> Inserts currently selected fuzzy match at the cursor position. This function will never overwrite a portion of the target segment, even if it is selected.
Overwrite Source <Shift+Ctrl+R> Overwrites the whole target segment with the source.
Insert Source <Shift+Ctrl+I> Inserts the source at the cursor position.
Search Project... <Ctrl+F> Opens a new Search window.
Select Fuzzy Match #N <Ctrl+#N> (#N is a digit from 1 to 5) - Selects the Nth fuzzy match displayed in the match viewer to replace or insert it to the segment. The Fuzzy matches section describes the colour coding in detail.

Go to

Next Untranslated Segment <Ctrl+U> Moves to the next segment that has no equivalent in the translation memory.
Next Segment <Ctrl+N> or <Enter> or <Tab> Moves to the next segment. If current segment is the last one in a file, moves to the first segment of the next file.
Previous Segment <Ctrl+P> or <Ctrl+Enter> or <Ctrl+Tab> Moves to the previous segment. Moves to the last segment of the previous file, if current segment is the first one one in a file.
Segment number... <Ctrl+J> The segment is opened on entering its segment number

Tools

Validate Tags <Ctrl+T> Checks for missing or displaced tags in formatted files. Will display a list of segments with tag mistakes. The Tag validation window section lists what you see there, and Working with formatted texts tells you why.

Options

Use Tab To Advance Sets segment validation key to <Tab> instead of the default <Enter>. This option is useful for some of Chinese, Japanese or Korean character input systems.
Font... Shows Font settings dialogue to modify the text display font. Users of old computers should better change font before opening a project or face performance penalty. The penalty is most painful on G4 + Mac OS X + Japanese combination.
File Filters.. Displays File filters dialogue to configure file handling and parsing.
Segmentation... Opens Source segmentation dialogue to configure text segmentation.
Editing Behaviour... Displays a Translation editing dialogue to configure target field Contents for not yet translated segments.
Restore Main Window Restores the components (editor, match viewer, and glossary viewer) of the main OmegaT window to their default state. Use this feature in case you have undocked, moved, or hidden one or more components, and you cannot get them back the way you want them.

Help

User Manual... <F1> Opens Help browser with this manual in a separate window.
About... Displays copyright, credits and license information.
