If you download MailScanner to try it out, or even better if you start using it on your site, please let us know by dropping us a line so we have some idea of where it is being used.
There are 2 mailing lists for MailScanner users.
The first is an "announcements only" list which I strongly advise you to subscribe to. This is where all announcements will be made of new versions of MailScanner and associated software such as MailWatch and MailScanner-MRTG. You can subscribe to this list by sending an email to jiscmail@jiscmail.ac.uk containing
The second list is a discussion list where all new features, configuration issues and so on are discussed. This is where to go if you need help. The developers also keep an eye on it, so it's a good place to suggest new features, problems, questions, etc. But please remember there are limits to the time that can be spent on unpaid support. If you need more specific help, please read about our professional support options. You can access this list on the web, or you can subscribe by sending an email to jiscmail@jiscmail.ac.uk containing
Before posting questions to us or the mailing list, please search the list archives and read the Installation FAQ.
We have an ongoing usage survey. If you use MailScanner on your site, please can you email us the number of messages processed by MailScanner each day. We don't need to know the number of viruses found, or anything like that, just the number of email messages that MailScanner scans each day. Thankyou!
Released unstable version 4.29.5-1. Added BinHex decoder and facility to have a directory full of Custom Functions to make upgrading easier. Old version of this facility (CustomConfig.pm) is still present as well.

Released stable version 4.28.5-2. Slight error which might stop RPM distributions installing properly.
Released stable version 4.28.5. This version can block password-protected zip files, and can unpack zip files to apply file name and content rules (as well as virus scanning) to their content. If you use the RPM distributions, then all required Perl modules will automatically installed for you when you run the "./install.sh" script. If you use the tar distribution, then please see the documentation for information about what Perl modules are needed. Please also read the ChangeLog.
Released unstable version 4.28.3. I have re-written the zip analyzing code to a large extent, and there is now a new keyword in the "Silent Viruses" list called "Zip-Password". Adding this to your Silent Viruses list will stop notifications about these being sent to the (possibly fake) sender of the file. You will still need to install the Perl modules Compress::Zlib and Archive::Zip yourself before using this version.
Released unstable version 4.28.2. This version can detect password-protected zip files and optionally block them. You will still need to install the Perl module Archive::Zip yourself before using this version.
Released unstable version 4.28.1. This version can read zip files so you can apply filename rules in there. Note: You will have to install the Perl module Archive::Zip yourself before this version will run.

Due to the nature of this software, I have an interest in the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act which has just come into force in the United Kingdom. Under section 3(3) of the Act, I believe that this sort of interception is legal, but care must be taken to ensure that no-one other than the sender and intended recipient of any message can read any part of that message. This certainly includes infected attachments.
